The Sustainable Development Goals Summit kick starts the week on Friday September 25. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon will convene the summit and call on world leaders to adopt the Goals, which aim to eradicate poverty and secure sustainable development for all. Prime Minister Solberg, who has co-chaired the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Advocacy Group, will be one of the speakers at the event. The Sustainable Development Goals pick up where the Millennium Development Goals left off. They are universal and set an ambitious course for global development for the next 15 years, until 2030.

On Saturday September 26th Prime Minister Solberg joins a star studded cast in New York’s Central Park to highlight the lack of resources for girls’ education. An estimated 60,000 people are expected to attend the annual Global Citizen Festival, which will also feature artists like Beyoncé, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran and Pearl Jam.

On Sunday September 27th world leaders will convene to discuss commitments to gender equality, a first at this level in a UN context. Norway’s Prime Minister will naturally play an active role as gender equality is a key Norwegian objective nationally and internationally. The Beijing +20 Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment will also mark the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action.

Also on Sunday, the Prime Minister will attend a High Level Event on Climate Change. It is hosted by the UN Secretary-General and President Francois Hollande and aims to rally support for a robust and sustainable global climate agreement in Paris this December.

The General Debate at the UN General Assembly opens on Monday September 28th.
