From Pole to Pole through an Ethiopia in transition

Last updated: 04.01.2010 // In 1991, UK comedian, actor and writer Michael Palin travelled from the North Pole to the South Pole as part of a TV-series. The journey took him through Ethiopia just after the Derg-downfall, and the episode of “From Pole to Pole” in Ethiopia gives an interesting insight into a country in transition.

Mr.Palin crossed the border from Sudan, and travelled through Gonder, Addis Abeba and Hawassa on his way into Kenya through Moyale. On the way, he is amazed by the Fasiledes Castle in Gonder, he stands on top of a toppled Lenin-statue in Addis, and he strolls around Lake Awassa.
